Effective literacy centers will increase students' reading skills. As students read, write, speak, listen, and work with letters and words (Diller, 2003), they develop “an intrinsic desire to initiate & sustain work ethic. Motivated students feel challenged, competent, and successful” (Morrow, 2002). Effective Literacy Center Characteristics 1. Effective literacy centers are organized and managed so that students can work successfully and independently. 2. Effective literacy centers are both motivating and engaging. 3. Effective literacy centers have a consistent structure throughout the year. 4. Effective literacy centers are aligned with curriculum. 5. Effective literacy center activities are based on ongoing assessment. 6. Effective literacy centers have a built-in accountability system. *Suggestion: Tell students which centers they will go to, and when. Students have choice within each center Goals for readers:
